Blaise Metreweli, the new head of MI6, has said the agency is operating between peace and war, the BBC reports.
In her first public address since taking office, Metreweli addressed the multifaceted threat posed by Russia. She said Russia was playing with Britain in a grey area with tactics that are just shy of war. She highlighted the threat posed by an aggressive, expansionist Russia and said Britain must continue to pressure Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on behalf of Ukraine.
Metreweli is the first woman to head Britain’s foreign intelligence service, and officially took office on the 1st of October.
She joined MI6 in 1999, starting out in the intelligence service’s technology department.
In a speech on the 15th of December, the new head described drone surveillance over airports and air bases, and cyberattacks on infrastructure, as a form of Russian hybrid warfare. She added that it was important to understand Russian attempts to intimidate and manipulate, as it affected everyone.
The head of MI6 described the biggest challenge of the 21st century not as who will have the most powerful weapons, but who will wield them the smartest: “‘Power itself is becoming more diffuse, more unpredictable as control over these technologies is shifting from states to corporations, and sometimes to individuals.”
